Blackjack Card Values Explained

Not sure what each playing card is worth in blackjack? This guide breaks down every card value clearly, so you can follow your blackjack game with confidence.

Your Quick Guide to Blackjack Card Values

Blackjack is one of the most popular card games in online casino and for good reason. The rules are simple to pick up, and the decisions you make at the table have a real impact on how each hand plays out. It all starts with understanding what each card is worth. Get that right, and everything else at the table clicks into place.

Here's everything you need to know about blackjack playing cards before you take a seat at our thrilling online blackjack games.

Blackjack Card Values: The Basics

There are three categories of blackjack card values to know: number cards, face cards, and the Ace. Each works differently, and the Ace is worth a section of its own.

Number Cards (2–9): What You See Is What You Get

Blackjack playing cards numbered 2 through 9 are valued at exactly the number printed on them. A 3 of hearts is worth 3. A 9 of spades is worth 9. The suit (hearts, clubs, diamonds, spades) makes no difference to the value at all.

These are the most predictable cards on the table. Their value is fixed and never changes, so when one lands in your hand, adding it to your running total is straightforward.

Face Cards (10, Jack, Queen, King): All Worth 10

This is where beginners sometimes do a double-take. The 10, Jack, Queen and King are all worth 10 points: no hierarchy between them, no difference by rank or suit. A King of clubs and a Jack of diamonds contribute the same amount to your total: 10.

Because there are four 10-value cards per suit in a standard deck, roughly 30% of all blackjack playing cards carry a value of 10. That's a significant proportion, and it shapes how experienced players think about the dealer's hidden card.

If you want to get deeper into how that influences decision-making at the table, our guide to blackjack betting strategies covers the strategic side in more detail.

The Ace: The Most Interesting Card in the Deck

The Ace stands apart from everything else. It's the only card in blackjack with two possible values, 1 or 11, and which value applies depends on whatever helps your hand most at that moment.

If you're dealt an Ace and a 7, the Ace counts as 11, giving you 18. A solid hand. Draw a 5 on top of that, though, and the total would be 23 with the Ace at 11, a bust. So, the Ace drops to 1, keeping you at 13 and in the game. This adjustment happens automatically; you don't need to declare anything.

This flexibility is what makes the Ace the most valuable card in the deck. It can rescue a hand that would otherwise go bust, and it's the card that makes a blackjack possible.

The Blackjack Card Value Chart

Here's a quick-reference summary of all three card types:

Card

Value

2 – 9

Face value (e.g. a 7 is worth 7)

10

10

Jack

10

Queen

10

King

10

Ace

1 or 11

Three categories. Not complicated, but each one plays a different role at the table.

One thing worth keeping in mind: suits are irrelevant in blackjack online. A 6 of hearts and a 6 of spades are identical in value. The only thing that matters is the number or face on the card.

It's also worth knowing that a standard blackjack game uses multiple decks, often six or eight, shuffled together. The card values don't change, but the larger deck size affects the probability of certain cards appearing, which is something more experienced players factor into their decisions.

What Is a Blackjack Hand?

The best possible hand in the game is called a "natural" or blackjack: an Ace paired with any 10-value card (10, Jack, Queen or King) as your first two cards. That's an automatic 21 from the deal. Unless the dealer matches it, you win immediately, typically at 3:2 odds.

Card values in online blackjack games remain the same across most popular blackjack types. Whether you're playing Classic Blackjack, European Blackjack, or any of the casino tables available at Virgin Games, the values don't change. What does vary between games is the rules around splitting, doubling down, and how the dealer plays their hand, so it's always worth checking the game overview before you place your first bet.

Hard Hands vs Soft Hands in Blackjack

Understanding card values in blackjack also means understanding how the Ace changes the nature of a hand.

Soft hand

Any hand where the Ace is counted as 11, and you're not at risk of busting if you take another card. Ace + 6 = soft 17. You can still draw without going over 21, because if the next card pushes you too high, the Ace simply becomes a 1 instead.

Hard hand

Either a hand with no Ace, or one where the Ace must be counted as 1 to stay under 21. Hard hands offer less room to manoeuvre, which is why the decision to hit or stand becomes more deliberate.

Knowing the difference matters because it directly affects your next move. A soft 16 and a hard 16 are very different situations, even though the number looks the same. Our guide to online blackjack rules covers hard and soft hands in the context of the full ruleset, if you want to read alongside this.

How Card Values Feed into Blackjack Strategy

Once you know your blackjack card values, you can start using a basic strategy chart - a reference guide that maps the statistically best move for every possible hand against every possible dealer upcard. It doesn't require memorising anything complicated; it's just a structured way to apply what you already know.

A few examples of how card values shape decisions:

  • With a hard total of 17 or higher, the standard move is to stand - the risk of drawing a high card outweighs the upside.

  • With an 11, doubling down is often the right call when the dealer shows a weaker card. With so many 10-value cards in the deck, the odds of landing close to 21 are reasonable.

  • Splitting Aces gives you two separate hands, each starting with the Ace's most powerful card - a strong position to be in. Splitting 10s, on the other hand, breaks up a hand worth 20. Not the move.

The dealer's hand matters here, too. If the dealer is showing a low card (a 5 or 6, say), they're in a weak position - they'll need to draw, and with so many 10-value cards around, there's a reasonable chance of a bust. That changes how you play your own hand.
