London, Monday 9th June 2008 – Virgin Games today announced that it has won the title of ‘Best Gaming Affiliate Programme’ at the affiliate marketing industry’s a4uAwards 2008 - the most prestigious affiliate awards ceremony in the UK.

Sixteen awards reflecting all areas of affiliate marketing were announced in front of more than 400 industry specialists at the Award ceremony on Thursday 5th June at the Sheraton Park Lane Hotel, London.

The event was organised by the largest UK affiliate community, the 24,000 member strong affiliates4u.com (formerly the a4uforum), to reward excellence and innovation of both affiliates and experienced affiliate marketing marketers.

The independent judging panel, consisting of some of the most experienced practitioners across the industry, used a 200 points system to choose Virgin Games affiliate programme for its commercial impact, creativeness and use of innovative tools for affiliates.

Virgin Games was one of only four companies to be shortlisted for the ‘Gaming & Casino’ Vertical category, and fought off tough competition from other well-established brands such as Jackpotjoy (awarded ‘Highly Commended’), Income Access and Loquax.

The Virgin Games affiliate team attended the first European CAP Spring break conference in Cyprus last week, and we enjoyed every minute of it. Ted and I came back with a few interesting leads, strengthened relations with some of our affiliate partners, a slight tan, and serious liver problems :)

We also hooked up with the good people at Wagerworks, Manyee, Jo and Rob, who treated us to an amazing dinner at “Neon Phalaron”, a seafood restaurant we highly recommend to anyone holidaying in the Limassol area of Cyprus.

Altogether a good event, even though affiliates weren’t probably as numerous as we expected.

Virgin Games Affiliates has been shortlisted for the much coveted “2008 Gaming affiliate program of the year” award, organized by A4U forum, the largest affiliate community site in the UK.

An apology, an explanation, a great improvement coming, a new game, a festival, lipsticks and nail varnishes.
Not only does this make for a very peculiar headline; but also an exciting month at Virgin Games. Read on...

Reporting / Stats problem:


As you might remember from the service email we sent out last Friday, we are currently going through heavy maintenance work on the affiliate system.


This decision has been triggered by the fact that our reporting has become painfully slow, sometimes plain useless, due to the growing number of affiliates using the system, the growing set of data being queried on, and busier servers too.


We are happy to inform you that the first step towards fixing this -namely switching servers- has been successfully completed over the weekend.

The second step -the one which will bring the most dramatic improvements- is still underway. Our dev team is busy rewriting the querying system and reorganizing the databases, so that the system won't have half as much calculation to make when a report is requested.

I have just tested the new system, and it looks like no report should take more than a few seconds to complete, which- you will agree- is a massive improvement on reports that wouldn't even load in the past few weeks.


We expect the new reporting to be live early next week, and we'll let you know once it's up. In the meantime, we obviously apologize for any problem you will encounter with our reporting until this is done, and we'll be happy to provide you with manual stats whenever requested.

Rest assured that tracking remained unaffected during last weekend's downtime; all traffic, registration and financial stats will be back in your reports when we get the new system live.

Virgin Games exhibited at last month's CAP Euro conference in London, and the whole team would like to thank all the affiliates who came to meet us at the stand. Not only did we receive some very assertive feedback on our products; which means a lot to us when it comes to planning for the future, but they also helped us get rid of the mountain of Poker books we brought along, and for that we'll be eternally grateful.

Multi Table Sit & Go Tournaments

Players can now enjoy multi-table as well as single-table sit & go tournaments.

They can now spontaneously enter a multi-table tournament rather than waiting for a scheduled tournament to begin. The greater the number of participants, the larger the prizes players can compete for!

These sit & go tournaments begin as soon as the designated number of participants have entered the tournament. Either 20 or 30 players will be the standard.

Late Again?

Don’t need to worry if you just miss out on the start of a scheduled multi table tournament! Late registrations will also bulk up the prize pot - however don’t leave your registration too late - players will be unable to register after the first player has been eliminated!

Freedom!

Players who win satellites do now have the freedom to choose their subsequent tourney. When a player wins a satellite, he is automatically registered for the same tournament on the next level. However the player can un-register for that tournament before it begins and save the entry fee (buy+rake) in the form of tournament credits.

It is also possible to accumulate tournament credit in order to enter a more expensive tourney or use tournaments credits to cover a portion of the buy-in and real money from the regular poker account to cover the remainder of the fee

Shush! New functionality…

Shushing a bothersome player. A user can block the chat messages of another player who is currently seated at the same table. The user simply clicks the chat bubble icon above the annoying player’s avatar to effectively block the display of that player’s chat messages. The annoying player’s messages will remain blocked between logins until the user decides to unblock the player by re-clicking the chat bubble icon above the player’s avatar.

New side games

Your players can now play their bonus money on the following side games: Roll’em Baby slots and Atlantis scratch cards.

75 ball game soon on Virgin Bingo. Pattern bingo adds a bit of extra 'spice' to the bingo game. Using bingo patterns in the bingo games is a fun way to keep it interesting for all the players and is also a great way to incorporate special Virgin promotions when playing bingo.

Swim up the 25p stream
A new stream is launching in July where all games of 90 ball bingo will also be able to be purchased at 25p. This should lead to greater pot sizes and more variety for bingo players.

Downloading of video games is to grow rapidly after the launch of a new platform that aims to replicate the functionality of iTunes, making it quicker and cheaper for gamers to download their favourite games.

Virgin Games and Game Domain International (GDI) today announce the successful completion of live tests for delivering a wide range of PC games on a 3D 'virtual world' platform.

The platform offers many key advantages over existing technologies - including rapid download speeds enabling play within minutes instead of hours, far greater security, and improved ease of use for the customer.

The platform's name - A World of My Own (AWOMO) is expected to significantly accelerate the growth of the total games market - already valued at $25b* making it bigger than the movie industry. AWOMO will initially make money on a pay per play or subscription basis.

Sir Richard Branson, Chairman of Virgin said: "This is a really exciting development for us, as it gives us the opportunity to do for PC Games what iTunes has done for music. The GDI technology will revolutionise how the mass market will play games, and will give them more choice for less money."

The PC games industry is plagued by high distribution costs and piracy which has hampered the growth of this market. Several of the world's major games publishers have already registered their support. The Koch Media Group, Europe's largest PC games distributor, working with major brands such as EA, Ubisoft and Deep Silver, were one of the first to witness this new technology in action. At the recent demonstration, their reaction was so enthusiastic that negotiations are already underway to sign off on a range of games to be made available on AWOMO when it launches.

Koch Media are one of the pioneers of on line distribution and work with e-tailers such as Metaboli and Gamesload and have many years experience in on line delivery but are constantly looking for ways to improve their service.

Roger Bennett, former director of ELSPA, the games industry association, said: "After twenty one years in the computer and video games industry, I can honestly say I have recently seen in operation the most unique technology that can bring the most potential value to the industry."
